Science at Kingsgate Primary School

The science curriculum at Kingsgate Primary School aims to teach children the scientific skills they need to be scientists. Every topic starts with an exciting lesson which gets children enthused and engaged. Even our youngest children are given the chance to explore and investigate for themselves.

The children also get the chance to go on a variety of trips. Last year, children visited the Natural History Museum, The Science Museum, The Royal Institution, Kew Gardens, Hampstead Heath and many other places to explore scientific ideas. One of our most popular KS2 trips is to the Young Scientist Centre, where children dress in lab coats and use the facilities of a real laboratory to safely explore materials and forces.

We also have links with local secondary schools and our KS2 children are given the opportunity to visit these schools and use the facilities to further their learning. STEM ambassadors also visit the school. These are scientists who volunteer to come into schools and inspire children with their knowledge and skills.

In 2014 our work in Science was recognised when we were awarded the prestigious Gold Primary Science Quality Mark by the Association of Science Educators. This recognises our excellence in teaching science and the high standards that we achieve.

At Kingsgate, we believe that children have to experience science first hand. These pictures showcase the learning in science at Kingsgate from Nursery all the way to Year 6.
