Kingsgate Primary School

Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) and Citizenship education at Kingsgate Primary School

At Kingsgate Primary School our PSHE and Citizenship Education aims to provide pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy, independent lives and to become informed, active and responsible citizens.

Our curriculum provides structured opportunities for the children to develop and practice personal, social and life skills. They explore a variety of issues, including rights and responsibilities, physical and emotional health and wellbeing, drug education (including alcohol and tobacco), sex and relationship education (SRE), citizenship, anti-bullying, safety and the environment. Lessons include class and group discussions and visitors from the local community, such as dentists, community police officers, firefighters and nurses. In Y6 children are taught Emergency Life Support Skills (ELS) through the Heartstart UK programme. They are taught to be ready, willing and able to step in and help others when the need arises.

At Kingsgate we promote 'British Values' through our spiritual, moral, social and cultural education which permeates through the curriculum and supports the development of the 'whole child'. We recognise that such development is most successful when those values and attitudes are promoted by all the staff and provide a model of behaviour for our pupils. As part of children's learning about democracy and the rule of law our children visit the Houses of Parliament and The Royal Courts of Justice.

'British Values' have been identified as:
Democracy;
Rule of Law;
Individual Liberty;
Mutual Respect;
Tolerance of different faiths and beliefs
