In September 2014, ICT was replaced by a new subject, computing. The National Curriculum for computing aims to ensure that all pupils:
  • Can understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation.
  • Can analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems.
  • Can evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems.
  • Are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology.
    (Department for Education, 2013)
Kingsgate Primary School is currently implementing a new computing curriculum across Key Stages 1 & 2 to meet the criteria of the national computing curriculum. As a result we ensure that children have a range of rich resources in the form of computing software and hardware to enable them to build their computing expertise to support their learning of using existing and emerging technologies.

The new curriculum has been designed to meet and challenge children so that we see a progression in computing skills across the whole curriculum.

Some examples of how we do this include using flip cameras to record and replay a debate in literacy or creating a graph with Microsoft Excel in science and mathematics lessons.

At Kingsgate Primary School we also use Google Apps, Discovery Espresso and Purplemash to teach children the vital skills of web design, blogging, programming and e-safety. Children can also showcase their work, comment in forums, take part in votes and safely email each other.

We are a digitally rich school which provides the children with all the experiences and computing skills they need to prepare them for 21st century lifestyles.
