Today Cherry class made houses using a variety of materials. Firstly we discussed lots of different types of houses including houses that we might see in our local area as well as more exotic ones, like tepees and igloos. After that we designed the houses we were going to make with rulers and pencils. The children noticed that they were using lots of shapes in their designs, and some added this detail to their labels. They also started to think about which materials they would need during the making process, and wrote them down on their design so they could refer back to it later.
Then we made our houses! The children used cardboard boxes, straws, lolly sticks, paper, tubes and felt to create the exterior and interior of their models. Lots of children drew on paper before sticking it on to their house to add detail to their models.
Lastly, we evaluated each other's models. We talked about using constructive comments and language to help other children reflect on their own design, and how saying unkind things would be disrespectful and not at all helpful! The children made some very insightful comments about each other's work, and were very complimentary towards everybody's models.
We had a fantastic DT day!
